What to Expect During Your Stay

Hillside Stables is a working farm. We have horses, donkeys, chickens, bees, dogs, cats and abundant wildlife. The animals are usually the only noise on the property, but they can be noisy and guests should be aware. We get an early start everyday and clients can participate in all, part or none of our daily routine which includes:

6:00 am     Wake-up, make bed, coffee, feed & water animals

7:30 am     Cross-country run or hike, followed by stretching & meditation

8:30 am      Home-cooked breakfast

9:00 am      Farm work as needed (cleaning stable, gardening, maintaining trails, property maintenance, exercising horses, cleaning tack etc)

1:00 pm      Home-cooked lunch or restaurant excursion, shopping, sight-seeing etc.

4:00 pm      Yoga on the lawn (riding lessons or other therapeutic or creative activities)

6:00 pm      Country-style family dinner or cook-out

7:00 pm      Attend AA or NA meeting (if desired)

10:00 pm    Night-check animals and lock-down buildings

11:00 pm    Lights out

The goal of Hillside Stables is to help clients achieve balance in their lives. We believe this can, in part, be achieved through rest, nutrition, exercise, fresh air and spirituality. Groom a horse, read the Harry Potter series, do a jigsaw puzzle or fix a small engine. We can provide almost anything. Some of our staff are in recovery themselves and familiar with the 12-step programs, so there is always someone to talk to if needed.

Referrals

Because of the ultra-exclusive nature of our retreat and services, we do not market ourselves and accept Recovery clients only by referral. Referrals can come from:

  • Doctors, therapists, addiction counsellors
  • Sobriety & life coaches
  • Partners of Hillside Stables
  • Former Clients
  • Without a referral, prospective clients will be interviewed by staff to determine if the environment at Hillside Stables is a suitable fit for their needs.

Equine Assisted Therapy

Equine assisted therapy has often proven successful with;

  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Anxiety, stress and depression
  • ADHD
  • Addictions
  • Self-esteem and body image problems
  • Autism, Asperger's Syndrome...and many other life situations that are difficult to manage.

Those who are familiar with horses recognize and understand the power of horses to influence people in incredibly powerful ways. The benefits of work ethic, responsibility, assertiveness, communication, and healthy relationships has long been recognized. Horses naturally provide these benefits. The use of horses is growing and gaining popularity with the rise of new approaches in working with the horses, including Equine Assisted Therapy. Hillside Stables has a verity of therapy animals and a certified equine therapist on site. The Canadian Government now recognizes the value of Equine Therapy and we hope to soon have some of our fine war veterans and other first responders as clients.
